This was one busy week!!! Our Grand Opening was a big success - Thank You to all who attended, became members or donated to our cause - it is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
A little over a week ago the Tucson Chess Center did not even exist! A lot of hard work went into getting the center ready to open; laying carpet, cleaning the place, installing tables and chairs, setting up for the simultaneous exhibition and for special guest Speakers. We were extremely fortunate to have Mayor Rothschild show up and say a few kind words.
Our goal was to put out a blog a couple times each week, since we are still working on having the internet access installed that is not feasible we don't usually get home until around midnight. Having to go to work during the days makes finding time a difficult task.
We have been able to fix up the club over the past weekend and have moved things around to make more sitting room for visitors as well as a permanent spot for the Tournament Director station - we even have started putting a lot of books out in our library section - there are a lot of good titles for members to look at! We still have one more trip to make with the books!
As a reminder we have our Tuesday Action again this Tuesday (duh!) and our Friday Night Blitz as well as our 1st Play In The Center - check our calendar for details.
A couple of items need addressed: For February we are not running the Month-Long Tournament, this will resume on March 1st. We have suspended our 5 PM classes until we can formulate a better schedule for the parents involved.
The University of Arizona chess team will most likely be using our location to host their match against our mortal enemies, ASU! This is exciting news and we can't wait to see that happen.
Also, GM Timur Gareyev is currently in Russia and will return to the states for a short bit before flying to Hawaii and then to Australia. This means that our planned visit of March 23 will be postponed until May - you can sign up for this event and get a lower rate before we go public with this information at the end of February.
